What We Know About House of the Dragon’s Second Season and Other Game of Thrones TV Adaptations

We have collected all the information on the further conflicts of the Targaryen house in one material: when the filming of the sequel is planned, how many seasons the authors want to release, and what is known about other series in the Game of Thrones universe.

When will the second season of “House of Dragon” be released?

Filming will start in April 2023. They will begin in the Spanish city of Cáceres, where the Royal Dockyard decorations are located, and will be later transferred to the Warner Bros. studio in the United Kingdom. It is expected that filming for the second season will end in December.

The second season may be released in the summer of 2024. The release date has not yet been finally determined, but HBO producer Casey Bloys expects the premiere of the second season at this time.

There is now only one showrunner for “House of the Dragon”. The first season was supervised by two people – director Miguel Sapochnik and screenwriter Ryan Condal. But Sapochnik will not be involved in the production of the sequel. The reason is the director’s fatigue: he has been actively developing the screen universe of “Game of Thrones” for many years.

Sapochik will remain as the executive producer of “House of the Dragon”. Instead, the main director will be Alan Taylor, one of the main directors of the first seasons of “Game of Thrones”. Ryan Condal will be the sole showrunner of “House of the Dragon”. He is writing the script in close collaboration with George Martin, the author of the original novels.

Ryan Condal and George Martin have been friends for many years. Before ‘House of the Dragon,’ Condal created the science-fiction series ‘Colony’.

What is known about the continuation of “House of the Dragon”?

The second season will focus on the Dance of the Dragons, the civil war between the supporters of Alysanne Hightower and Rhaenyra Targaryen. George Martin confirmed that there will be no more noticeable time jumps in the show. The writers will devote time to the war and the relationships between the characters.

The cast for the second season has not yet been announced, but it is known that Winterfell – the ancestral castle of the Starks – will be shown in the continuation. A significant role in the plot will be played by Cregan Stark, a distant ancestor of Ned Stark.

The story of “House of the Dragon” will last for at least three seasons. Deadline claims that George R. R. Martin and Ryan Condal are actively discussing the future of the series. It is possible that the show will end after its third season. If that is not enough, “House of the Dragon” will be extended to a fourth season.

The second season will have eight episodes. For comparison: the first season of “House of Dragons” consisted of 10 episodes. The smaller number of episodes is not related to cutting costs on the show: a Deadline source said it is justified by the script.

The actors received the script for the second season much later than the initial deadlines. Matt Smith, who played Damon Targaryen, complained about this in March 2023. Meanwhile, screenwriter Sarah Hess claimed in December 2022 that they were almost finished writing drafts. It is unknown why the script delivery was delayed.

In the following seasons, even more dragons will appear. Showrunner Ryan Condal claims that HBO has already allocated the necessary funds for computer graphics.

Ryan Condal wants to turn “House of the Dragon” into an anthology about the Targaryens. The series may not end with “Dance of the Dragons”. In an interview with Collider, Condal mentioned that he would like to show different eras of the Targaryen house in the series. Among them are the invasion of Aegon the Conqueror on Westeros and the fall of Old Valyria.

Condal’s plans were confirmed by Miguel Sapochnik. In an interview, he mentioned that the writers can tell about the distant past of the Targaryens and events after the Dance of Dragons.

What is known about other series of “Game of Thrones”?

George Martin and HBO have announced the production of several more series set in the universe of “A Song of Ice and Fire”. It’s not certain that all of the shows will ultimately reach the viewer. It’s possible that some of them will be canceled even during the development stage – as it already happened with the spin-off “Long Night”.

Continuation of “Game of Thrones” about Jon Snow. Kit Harington will return to his role and also serve as a producer of the series. The plot will focus on Jon Snow’s adventures beyond the Wall. According to The Hollywood Reporter, if the series is successful, HBO will order spin-offs about other characters from “Game of Thrones”, such as Arya Stark or Brienne of Tarth.

TV series about Dunk and Egg. The plot of this show is based on George Martin’s tales about the Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. The main characters are the hedge knight Dunk and his young squire Egg. The rebellion of Blackfyres against the Targaryens plays an important role in the story.

The showrunner of the series will be Stephen Conrad, the creator of “Patriot” and screenwriter of “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.”

“The Sea Snake”, or 9 Voyages. A spin-off about the adventures of Corlys Velaryon, one of the important characters of “House of the Dragon”. Presumably, the series will tell about his travels around the world in his youth.

Showrunner of “Sea Snake” – Bruno Heller, one of the creators of the TV shows “Rome” and “Pennyworth”.

“10,000 Ships”. A prequel about the warrior princess Nymeria and her conquest of Dorne. The events of the series take place a thousand years before “Game of Thrones”. The showrunner of the show is Amanda Segel, the screenwriter of “The Mist”.

Animation projects. HBO is developing several animated series based on “Game of Thrones.” One of the spin-offs will focus on the Empire of Yi-Ti, a analogue of ancient China in the world of “A Song of Ice and Fire.”
